The application of cricoid pressure, also known as the Sellick Maneuver, stops gastric regurgitation from reaching the lungs in patients being intubated. When performed correctly, cricoid pressure can help proper tracheal tube placement. Cricoid pressure is also recommended during mask ventilation during CPR to reduce gastric distension and consequential regurgitation.
